How We Compare

Differences Between Clinical Pilates and a Traditional Pilates Class

EW Motion Therapy
Specialist-led, personalized clinical programming
Studio Pilates
Instructor-led, group-based general fitness
Before your first session Complete a full clinical evaluation before starting sessions. Complete an intake form and find an open spot in a class.
Your program Class programming is tailored to your body and goals. Class programming is built for groups, not for you individually.
During your session Small group sizes allow your instructor to modify movements, adjust progressions, and provide individualized guidance in real time. Larger class sizes can make it more difficult to consistently tailor instructions to each individual's needs.
Who guides you Instructors are trained in core Pilates principles and advanced anatomy and biomechanics, so movement is adjusted for each client. Instructors are trained in core Pilates principles and class leadership, so movement is guided and cued to keep the group moving together.
Best for Those who want personalized results that stick, in a safe space with hands-on instruction. Those who can self-correct and do not need instruction tailored to their body.

Frequently Asked Questions

I've never done Pilates before. Is this for beginners?

Absolutely. Clinical Pilates is designed for people at every fitness level. Your 60-minute evaluation determines your safe starting point, and we offer four class levels (Pilates 101, Foundations, Intermediate, and Advanced), so you'll always work at the right intensity. Your instructor will guide you every step of the way.

I have pain and an injury history. Can I still do Pilates?

This is exactly why Clinical Pilates exists. Our instructors understand pain, injury, and movement dysfunction. Your evaluation identifies what movements are safe for you right now, and your program is customized around your specific needs. We won't instruct you to do anything that isn't safe for your body.

What's the difference between Clinical Pilates and physical therapy?

Physical Therapy (PT) is clinical treatment for injury, pain, or dysfunction. If you have a specific problem, PT fixes it. Clinical Pilates is a wellness-focused movement practice for long-term strength, mobility, and performance. Some clients do PT first, then transition to Clinical Pilates to maintain progress. Others start with Pilates for injury prevention or performance optimization. They're complementary services with different goals.

Why do I need a 60-minute evaluation? Can I just start with a class?

The evaluation is what makes Clinical Pilates clinical. We don't put people in classes without understanding their movement patterns, injury history, and goals. That 60 minutes ensures you're placed safely and effectively, and it becomes the foundation for everything we do together. It's the reason our clients get results.

How is this different from other Pilates studios?

Clinical Pilates is backed by experts with advanced training, requires a comprehensive evaluation before starting, and delivers individualized programming based on your movement assessment. Our small group classes max out at 6 people (not 12+), and your progress is tracked through objective reassessments every 8-12 weeks. This isn't designed to be a fitness studio. It's a clinical wellness service.

I'm already fit and flexible. Will this be challenging enough?

Clinical Pilates challenges even the most advanced athletes because we're refining movement quality, not just building endurance or strength. Your evaluation will show us exactly where you are, and we'll place you in the appropriate level (we have Foundations, Intermediate, and Advanced classes). You'll be challenged, trust us.

I'm worried I'm too old or out of shape for this. Will I be able to keep up?

Clinical Pilates is specifically designed for people at every fitness level and every age. We have clients in their 20s and clients in their 80s. Your evaluation ensures you start at the right place for your body, and our small group size means you get individual attention and modifications. You're not too anything. You're exactly who Clinical Pilates is for.

Will I lose weight doing Pilates?

Clinical Pilates builds lean muscle, improves movement quality, and enhances body composition, but weight loss is primarily driven by nutrition and overall caloric balance. If weight loss is your primary goal, we'd recommend combining Clinical Pilates with Personal Training and nutrition guidance. Pilates alone isn't a weight loss program.

This will be my first Pilates class. What should I wear? What should I bring?

Wear comfortable, form-fitting athletic clothing that allows your instructor to see your movement patterns. Bring a water bottle and grip socks if you prefer not to be barefoot, but don't worry about the equipment. All equipment and extra props will be provided.

How often should I do Pilates? Most clients see the best results with 2-3 sessions per week. Your instructor will provide a personalized recommendation based on your evaluation, your goals, and your availability. Consistency matters more than frequency. Doing Pilates once a week for a year will yield better results than doing it 5 times a week for a month and then stopping.
