Dry Needling Pain Therapy

DRY NEEDLING | BIRMINGHAM & TUSCALOOSA, AL

Relieve Pain. Reset Muscle.
Recover Faster.

Precision-driven dry needling designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, and speed recovery.

How Dry Needling Works

Break the Pain-Tension Cycle

Trigger points are small “knots” in a muscle that form when part of the muscle stays constantly tight. This happens when the muscle is overworked or strained, and can cause poor blood flow, buildup of irritation, and pain. Over time, this creates a cycle of tightness and sensitivity that the body struggles to resolve on its own.

Dry needling focuses on restoring normal neuromuscular function to break this pain–tension cycle. By placing a needle directly into the trigger point, it helps the muscle release, improves circulation, and resets the way the muscle and nervous system communicate. Then, the tissue can relax and recover more effectively.

Conditions and Symptoms We Treat

Tension Headaches Many tension headaches originate in the muscles of your neck, shoulders, and upper back. Dry needling works to normalize that muscle activity, which can reduce both the frequency and intensity of your headaches.
Chronic Neck Pain Restricted cervical muscles can compress surrounding tissue and limit how far you can move. Dry needling targets dysfunctional tissue to restore normal muscle function and restore your range of motion.
Shoulder Pain Restricted shoulder muscles limit your ability to reach, lift, and sleep comfortably. Dry needling addresses the dysfunctional tissue so your shoulder can move through its full range without restriction.
Tennis & Golfer's Elbow Both conditions involve overuse of the forearm muscles, leading to dysfunctional tissue patterns. Dry needling helps normalize muscle activity and support tissue recovery, so you can grip and move without pain.
Low Back Pain Chronically overactive spinal muscles can remain in a shortened state even without structural injury. Dry needling targets that dysfunctional tissue to reset muscle activity and reduce persistent pain.
Hip Tightness & Pain Tight hip muscles affect how you walk, move, and how your lower back responds to daily demands. Dry needling works to restore normal muscle length and function, so movement becomes more efficient and less painful.
Sciatica When the piriformis or surrounding hip muscles become dysfunctional, they can compress the sciatic nerve, causing pain down the leg. Dry needling helps restore normal muscle function and reduce neural irritation.
IT Band Syndrome IT band irritation typically originates from dysfunctional glute and hip musculature that places excessive load on the lateral knee. Dry needling targets those contributing muscles to reduce tension and restore more normal movement mechanics.
Knee Pain Restricted muscles around the knee (quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves) can compress the joint and limit its movement and load capacity. Dry needling targets dysfunctional tissue to restore normal muscle function and restore your range of motion.
Plantar Fasciitis Heel and arch pain is often related to dysfunctional calf and lower leg musculature that increases stress on the plantar fascia. Dry needling addresses that muscle dysfunction so the tissue can recover and pain can resolve.

Reduce Restriction, Improve Movement:
Your Path Forward

Licensed physical therapist performing dry needling treatment on a patient's knee to relieve muscle pain and trigger points at a physical therapy clinic.
1

Before we prescribe anything, we want to understand you, your goals, your pain points, and your life.

The Goal

Measure where dysfunction exists and establish a clear plan for releasing tension and restoring movement.

2

Your dry needling plan targets the specific trigger points identified in your assessment, beginning the work of normalizing dysfunctional muscle tissue and resetting how your body moves.

The Goal:

Restore muscle function and neuromuscular signaling by releasing dysfunctional trigger points.

3

As tissue function normalizes, treatment progresses to integrating movement patterns and loading the tissue to establish the healthy healing response your body needs to hold its progress.

The Goal:

Build durable tissue health so your body moves as a coordinated system with greater precision, capacity, and control.

4

With strength and movement capacity restored, treatment shifts beyond foundational control into the real-world demands of training, work, and daily life.

The Goal:

Refine movement efficiency under load, speed, and variability so your body performs with greater resilience, precision, and long-term sustainability.

"I've dealt with muscle pain & mobility issues my whole life. I was really starting to struggle with daily activities & thought I was going to have to give up attending college football games because I simply couldn't handle a full day being on my feet anymore. The team at Liberty Park worked with me to increase my mobility and regain my independence. Special thanks to Skylar and the amazing work she does at dry needling. It really has been a life changing experience and I can't recommend them enough."
Tyler Cole
"I have been a patient on and off for over two years, and the patient care has always been top tier. Ben Bullard is my primary PT. His manual therapy, dry needling, and assigned strength exercises are the best I have received, and I have been to my fair share of PT clinics."
Summer Wilkins
"Andrew, Scott and the rest of the team were awesome! Had some hip pain and the stretching regimen and dry needling worked wonders. Would recommend 100%"

Dry Needling

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dry needling painful?

Most people describe it as a brief, sharp sensation when the needle reaches the trigger point. This is followed by a deep ache or muscle twitch as the tension releases. Soreness afterward is common and typically resolves within 24–48 hours.

How is this different from acupuncture?

Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy meridians. Dry needling is a clinical technique rooted in Western anatomy that targets neuromuscular trigger points to release muscle tension, improve blood flow, and restore movement.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and how your body responds. Some people see significant relief after one session. Chronic tension often requires multiple sessions over several weeks. Your therapist will build a plan based on your progress.

Can I combine dry needling with physical therapy? Yes - If you're working with an EW physical therapist and they determine dry needling supports your recovery, it can be integrated into your plan of care. Standalone dry needling (self-pay) is also available if you're not currently in PT.
Who performs dry needling at EW?

All dry needling at EW is performed by licensed physical therapists with advanced training in trigger point dry needling. You will always receive care from a clinician who understands movement, pain referral patterns, and how to build treatment around your goals.
